Young Farmer Start-Up Grant in Sardinia: From Business Plan to Final Payment

An anonymised case study from Sardinia. A young farmer needed coordinated technical and administrative support to establish a new agricultural business, obtain start-up aid and complete every commitment required for the final grant payment.

The objective

The project was designed to create a viable and more resilient horticultural farm. The development strategy went beyond seasonal summer vegetables: it introduced an artichoke crop, extended the production period and increased the area devoted to horticulture.

Support provided

  • Preparation and development of the farm business plan.
  • Technical integration of the funding application and management of the required supporting documentation.
  • Review and coordination of agricultural land lease agreements and related registrations.
  • Coordination with the agricultural assistance centre for the Chamber of Commerce registration, VAT position, farm file, certified email and online application procedures.
  • Monitoring of the professional and administrative requirements throughout the implementation period.
  • Preparation of the final report and documentation for the balance payment.

What was achieved

The horticultural area reached 2.39 hectares, an increase of 0.52 hectares compared with the initial situation. The farm diversified its production by adding an artichoke field and extending the summer-vegetable season.

The farmer completed the required 150-hour professional course and fulfilled the conditions relating to active-farmer status, social-security registration, professional agricultural entrepreneur status and minimum standard output.

Grant outcome

The approved young-farmer start-up grant amounted to €35,000. An initial payment of €24,500 was followed by a final balance of €10,500. The on-site inspection was positive, the business-plan objectives were confirmed as achieved, and the final payment was authorised without reductions or exclusions.

Why this case matters

Rural projects in Sardinia often require more than a single technical report. They depend on the alignment of land availability, business planning, professional qualifications, registrations, deadlines and evidence of implementation. This case shows how continuous coordination—from the first application to the final payment—can turn a funding opportunity into an operational agricultural business.

Client identity and precise location have been withheld to protect confidentiality. The figures and results presented here are based on the completed project documentation.
